applying to universities across canada?

  • Application deadlines vary across Canada. Each university has their own due date so it is best you check the website of the university you are interested in by October of Gr 12. Also, check the due dates for major or special scholarships as these may require an earlier admission application date along with a separate scholarship application form.
  • Ms. McElrea's cautious due date for all applications is December 1st of your Grade 12 year.
  • Each university has their own set of admission requirements so it is very important that you review what Gr 12 courses they will accept and/or requirements for admission to the faculty or program of your choice. Not all Gr 12 courses at SMA are usable for admission purposes.
  • If you are applying to a university outside of MB - you will need to send your grade 11 transcript as well as your Gr 12 interim transcript. You will also need to send your final JUNE transcript.

Applying to Universities in Ontario?

  • Applying to Ontario universities will require one application made through OUAC - Ontario Universities Application Centre which is a centralized application office:   http://www.ouac.on.ca/ouac-105/
  • It is strongly recommended that you apply by January 1st. Check the due dates for major or special scholarships as these may require an earlier admission application date (Dec 1st) along with a separate scholarship application form in order to be considered for these higher paying scholarships.
  • Each university has its own set of admission requirements so it is very important that you review what Gr 12 courses they will accept and/or requirements for admission to the faculty or program that you want. Not all Gr 12 courses at SMA are usable for admission purposes at some Ontario universities. Start planning in Gr 10!
  • You need to arrange for your transcripts to be sent to the university.

How your application is considered

They assess whether you meet program-specific requirements for your intended area of study.

The emphasis of our final assessment will be placed on the results of your most recent two years of study, including your marks in prerequisite courses.

You will be considered for your first University of Toronto choice. In the event you are not admitted to your preferred program, you may be considered for alternate programs, space permitting. Admission decisions are made on a continuing basis until programs are full.  It is always wise to apply and submit required documentation well in advance of deadlines, as some programs fill early, and some may fill even before the published deadlines.

Conditional Offers of Admission:

Most of our admission decisions are based on interim marks, and so our offers are typically conditional on achieving acceptable final standing.

The terms of the offer, including conditions and specific minimum grade thresholds, are described in the terms and conditions section of your offer letter.  Admitted students who do not meet the required condition(s) can expect to have their offer rescinded and will not be permitted to register.

If you are not admitted to U of T

The most common reasons for not being admitted to the University of Toronto:

  • your overall average, or grades in prerequisite subjects, are not competitive

  • you have repeated an unacceptable number of courses for the program(s) you have selected

  • you have an insufficient number of available courses at the time of consideration

  • Supplementary information (if required) was not submitted, or was not competitive
